Two cave systems, and no boat reaches both

Zakynthos has two separate sets of sea caves, at opposite ends of a mountainous island. The Blue Caves are at the northern tip, along the shore between Agios Nikolaos and Cape Skinari. The Keri Caves are at the southern one, under Cape Keri. No boat trip visits both, so the first decision is a coast rather than a tour. A third group causes most of the confusion. The west-coast caves on the Porto Vromi circuit — Maravelia, the Heart Cave, Hidden Treasure — are real caves in the same limestone, and operators there advertise “blue caves”. Inside the cave, or a photograph of the entrance

This is the difference two listings with identical photographs will not tell you. Small boats and speedboats sail through the arches and into the chambers; the 60-seat excursion boats hold at the mouths. The Keri Caves make the point plainly — some entrances there are wide enough to take a boat through, others only wide enough to swim into.

It is worth separating the caves you enter from the ones you pass. Poseidon’s Face is a rock profile in the Porto Vromi cliffs, not a chamber, and Maravelia is usually a stop off the bow. The Blue Caves, the Keri Caves and Eros Cave are places a small hull genuinely goes into.

North coast: the Blue Caves
