Private Boat Tours in Zakynthos: Skippered Charters and Licence-Free Hire

Prices are per boat, not per person. A licence-free self-drive speedboat starts at $146 for up to four people; a skippered two-hour charter to Shipwreck Beach and the west-coast caves is $233 for up to six; a private south-coast boat for two with a skipper is $276; larger skippered boats run $339 to $572. Split across a full boat, most of these come to $37–$60 per head — close to a shared seat, with the timing and stops decided by you.

Not for boats up to 30 horsepower. Greek rules let anyone over 18 with ID drive a rental boat below that limit after a safety briefing, and the licence-free rentals in Zakynthos are built around it — one operator states plainly '80 hp with captain, 30 hp without'. Some firms quote higher limits, so confirm the engine size with the operator before you rely on driving yourself. Anything more powerful needs a recognised skipper's licence.

Not the small ones. The Blue Caves are at the northern tip of the island and the Keri Caves at the southern tip, and licence-free speedboats carry a coastal limit that rules out the crossing. Boats from Porto Vromi reach Shipwreck Beach and the west-coast caves; boats from Agios Sostis reach the Keri Caves, the Mizithres and Marathonisi. One skippered charter offers a full-island option in a five-hour slot. Choose the coast first.

A skipper if you want to be in the caves rather than steering outside them, if anyone is nervous on the water, or if you want a west-coast trip where the swell can build fast. Self-drive if you want the whole day to yourself and are comfortable with a briefing and a chart. The price gap is smaller than you might expect: the self-drive boat for four is $146 and the skippered boat for six is $233, and on the skippered boat the fuel is included.

It depends on the boat, so read the inclusions. Skippered charters usually include fuel. Self-drive rentals often charge it locally — one operator quotes about €30 to €40 for a full rental for four — while others include it in the price. Anchoring fees at designated stops are typically covered. Drinks, ice and snorkel gear are frequently not, even on skippered boats.

No boat can. Navagio is closed to landings and to swimming inside the bay through 31 October 2026, and every boat holds about 50 metres offshore. A private boat still gives you the best photograph, because you choose the hour and the angle, but the swimming on a west-coast charter happens at White Beach, Sfogio and inside the caves. The licence-free speedboats carry four; the skippered Porto Vromi charter carries six; south-coast private boats range from two up to seven; the larger Marinello and yacht-style charters take five to nine. Prices on GetYourGuide are quoted 'per group up to N', and the number is the boat's limit including children. Over that, you need a second boat or a semi-private day tour capped at ten.

As early as the operator allows. The morning sea is calmest, the light inside the caves is at its best from about 09:00 to midday, and the shared fleet has not yet arrived. The afternoon brings the maistro, the north-westerly sea breeze that builds through the day and roughens the west coast in particular. Sunset slots are lovely for the Mizithres and the south coast but are not the time to be inside a west-coast cave.

Skippered boats are the right choice with children: life jackets are provided in children's sizes on the established charters, the skipper handles the caves and the swell, and you can shorten the day if it is not working. Self-drive boats are permitted for families but put the responsibility on you, and a speedboat in an afternoon chop is hard work with small children aboard.

The operator cancels or reroutes. Every private boat we list offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure and reschedules or refunds weather cancellations; skippers make the call on the morning if the swell has built overnight.
