Private Boat Tours in Zakynthos: Skippered Charters and Licence-Free Hire

A private boat is the only way to choose your own hour at the caves — and split between four or six people it costs less per head than most visitors assume. Skippered charters from Porto Vromi and Agios Sostis, and licence-free speedboats you drive yourself, compared on what they actually reach.

The Experience

The Private Trip Most People Book: Shipwreck and the West-Coast Caves with a Skipper

Two hours from Porto Vromi Anafonitria in a skippered speedboat for up to six — the wreck, more than a dozen caves, White Beach and Poseidon's Profile, at your own pace.

Highlights

  • Your own boat and skipper for up to six people — under $40 each when full
  • The wreck from the water, then the west-coast caves in depth: Maravelia, Hidden Treasure, Dolphins Cave, the Livaritos caves
  • Swim inside a cave or off White Beach, Freedom Beach or Sfogio — your choice of stops
  • Pass the Poseidon's Profile rock formation
  • Fuel included; extend the trip on the spot if you want longer

What's Included

  • Private boat with skipper for up to six people
  • Fuel
  • Life jackets, waterproof bags and safety equipment
  • About two hours on the water, extendable on the spot at extra cost

How a Private Boat Day Works

Four decisions, and the first one is the coast.

  1. Pick the Coast, Then the Harbour

Private boats from Porto Vromi reach Shipwreck Beach and the west-coast caves in a two-hour loop. Boats from Agios Sostis or Laganas reach the Keri Caves, the Mizithres and Marathonisi. No small boat does both in a day; a few larger charters offer an all-round-the-island option.

  2. Skipper or Self-Drive

A skipper knows the swell, the caves and the Marine Park rules and costs a little more. Self-drive needs no licence in Greece for boats up to 30 horsepower — you get a briefing, a chart and a coastal limit, and fuel is often extra.

  3. Count Heads, Then Do the Arithmetic

Prices are per boat. A $233 skippered boat for six is $39 a head, which is what a shared seat costs — with the departure time and the stops decided by you rather than a timetable.

  4. Book a Morning and Bring the Kit

The sea is calmest before noon and the light in the caves is best. Most charters include life jackets and dry bags; snorkelling gear, drinks and a cool box vary by boat, so read the inclusions.

Which Private Boat Should You Book?

Prices are per boat. The columns differ on who drives, which coast, and how many people share the cost.

The Breakdown

Best Private Boat in Zakynthos for Every Coast and Budget

Shipwreck, Blue Caves, Keri Caves, Marathonisi, full island — with a skipper or the wheel in your own hands.

Every shared boat on Zakynthos arrives at the caves at roughly the same time, because they all leave on the same schedule. A private boat is how you buy a different hour — the Blue Caves before the glow fades, the Keri Caves before the swell builds, a cove with nobody else in it. The price looks alarming next to a $32 seat until you remember it is per boat, not per person: a $233 charter for six is $39 each, and a $146 self-drive speedboat for four is $37 each. This page compares what each private option actually reaches, because the coast decides that, not the money. If you are still choosing a coast, start with north vs south.

Best overall: a skippered speedboat from Porto Vromi

Zakynthos: Shipwreck & Caves Private Boat Tour with Skipper is $233 for the boat, for up to six — 4.8 from 241 reviews, the most-reviewed private boat on the island. It leaves from Porto Vromi Anafonitria, the harbour nearest the wreck, and the skipper runs a two-hour loop that the operator lists stop by stop: Shipwreck Beach, the Maravelia cave with the Hidden Treasure cave, the Window of Luck, Sfogio and White Beach, Dolphins Rock, the west-coast “blue caves”, the Livaritos caves and a pass under Poseidon’s Profile. Fuel is included when the skipper drives, and you can extend on the spot for a fee. Bring your own snorkel gear, drinks and ice — none are provided. Our breakdown →

Two things to know. Navagio itself is closed to landings and to swimming inside the bay through 31 October 2026, so the wreck is a photo stop from about 50 metres off, and the swimming happens in the caves and coves. And these are the west-coast caves, not the famous northern Blue Caves; the Maravelia Cave and Poseidon Cave guides explain what the route passes. For the northern Blue Caves by private boat, the Blue Caves tours page lists the Agios Nikolaos options.

Best value: drive it yourself, no licence needed

Zakynthos: Private Self-Drive Speedboat Rental No Licence is $146 for up to four, rated 4.9 by 97 travellers, from Agios Sostis on the south coast with pickup from the southern resorts included. You get a briefing and a supervised test drive in the harbour, a canopy, a cool box and a Bluetooth speaker, then the Keri Caves, the Mizithres and Marathonisi are yours in whatever order you like. Fuel is paid locally — the operator quotes roughly €30–40 for a full rental — and you need a photo of a passport or driving licence. Our breakdown →

The licence rule is simple in principle and messy in practice. Greece lets you drive a rental boat without a licence up to 30 horsepower, and the rental firms’ own listings say the same — one advertises “80 hp with captain, 30 hp without”. Some operators quote higher limits, so confirm the boat’s engine with them before you rely on it. Whatever the figure, the boats come with a coastal limit and a no-go line at the Marine Park’s protected zone; the briefing covers both.

Other self-drive options: Katerina’s boat rental without skipper from Porto Vromi at $198 for up to six (fuel extra) puts you on the west-coast loop yourself, and Ocean Private Cruises’ boat rental is $228 for up to four with fuel included.

Best for couples: a private south-coast boat for two

Zakynthos: Turtle Island and Caves Private Boat Trip is built for two — $276 for the boat, 4.9 from 185 reviews, three hours out of Agios Sostis with a skipper, snorkelling gear, underwater photos and refreshments. Marathonisi, the Keri Caves and the Mizithres, in your order, with a captain who follows the Marine Park’s 15-metre rule and lets a turtle set the pace. Our breakdown →

For four to six people on the same coast, Porto Koukla’s private south-coast caves and swimming tour is $339 for up to six with 50 minutes each at the caves and the stacks, and the Marinello charter from Laganas beach at $572 adds Eros Cave and the Pisines on a boat with a shower and a sundeck. The shared alternatives are on the Keri Caves tours page.

Best for families and small groups: semi-private, capped at ten

Not everyone needs the whole boat. Zakynthos: Shipwreck & Blue Caves Max 10 guests is a land-and-sea day for $47 per person — 5.0 from 417 reviews — with a minibus of at most ten, the Navagio viewpoint, Xigia’s sulphur beach and a 2.5-hour speedboat leg from Porto Vromi Maries through the wreck, the caves, White Beach and Poseidon’s Face. Note the semi-private boat ticket of €50 per person is paid on site on top of the booking. Our breakdown →

Full island and skipper-or-self-drive

Ionian Sea Cruises’ private boat, skippered or self-drive$384 for up to five, 5.0 from 22 reviews — is the one listing that lets you choose north to the wreck and Blue Caves, south to Marathonisi and Keri, or a full circuit, in a morning (09:00–14:00) or sunset (15:00–20:00) slot. Fuel, snorkel gear and a fridge of water are included; hotel transfer is not.

If your idea of private is a couple’s evening rather than a boat, the Romantic Sunset Tour to Mizithres and Agalas Cave ($53 per person, 4.7, 557 reviews) is a minivan tour, not a cruise — the Mizithres viewpoint, the Damianos cave near Agalas and sunset with a glass of wine. It belongs here only because it is what many people searching “private sunset Zakynthos” actually want. Our breakdown →

Whichever you pick, book a morning, early in your stay, and check availability for the skippered charter above; the what to bring guide covers the kit a private boat does not.
