North or South? How to Pick the Right Coast for Your Zakynthos Boat Trip

Nearly every boat trip sold on Zakynthos belongs to one of two clusters, and they are at opposite ends of an island whose roads are slower than the map suggests. The north gives you Navagio, the Blue Caves, Cape Skinari and cliffs; the south gives you the Keri Caves, Marathonisi, the loggerhead turtles and the Mizithres. Nothing does both in a day. Here is how to choose — starting from where you are sleeping, because that decides more than anything else.

Start with your resort
Zakynthos is roughly 40 km long and its resorts sit at both ends. A boat trip from the wrong coast means an hour’s drive each way before you have seen any water.
Staying in Laganas, Kalamaki, Keri, Lithakia or Agios Sostis? You are on the south coast already. Agios Sostis harbour is 2.5 km from Laganas; Limni Keriou is a short drive round the bay. Do the southern trip first, boat-only, and consider the north as a full land-and-sea day with pickup so nobody has to drive.
Staying in Tsilivi, Alykes, Alikanas or Agios Nikolaos? Agios Nikolaos is your harbour — about 28 km and roughly 35 to 60 minutes from Tsilivi on the coast road, minutes from Alykes. Do the north boat-only; take a pickup tour south if you want the turtles.
Staying in Zakynthos Town, Argassi or Vasilikos? Both coasts are 30 to 45 minutes away and you can choose on merit — or take the full-day Pirate Ship Cruise to Shipwreck Beach & Caves ($41, seven hours) straight from the town harbour, which rounds the island to the wreck and the northern caves.
What the north actually delivers
The north is the postcard. The Blue Caves glow their strongest between about nine and noon; small boats and speedboats sail under the Skinari arches while the 60-seaters stop outside. Then the boats run west to Navagio, where the shipwreck sits on a sand cove under 200 m cliffs — and where, through 31 October 2026, landing and swimming inside the bay are prohibited, so every boat holds about 50 m offshore. Swim stops have moved to Agios Andreas, the caves or Xigia.

What the south actually delivers
The south is the swim. Boats cross Laganas Bay — the Marine Park, where loggerheads nest from mid-May to August and surface from May to October — to Marathonisi’s beach, then round to the Keri Caves and through the arches, with the twin Mizithres stacks and Cameo Island as the bookends. The bay is sheltered, the water is calmer and warmer than the north, and the caves are entered and swum rather than photographed.

- First visit, one trip only: north, for the Blue Caves and the wreck. Book a morning.
- Children, nervous swimmers, anyone prone to seasickness: south — sheltered water, shorter sailings, glass-bottom boats, turtles.
- No car: either, with pickup. The northern land-and-sea day is the longer commitment.
- Photographers: north in the morning for the blue; south at sunset for the Mizithres.

Can one boat trip see both the Blue Caves and the Keri Caves?
No. They are at opposite tips of the island, and the shared boats work one coast each. A full-island cruise from Zakynthos Town reaches the northern caves and the wreck but not the Keri Caves.
Which coast is better if I am staying in Laganas?
The south, for a boat-only trip — Agios Sostis harbour is 2.5 km away. Take the north as a land-and-sea day with hotel pickup rather than driving an hour to Agios Nikolaos.
Which coast is calmer?
