Zakynthos: Blue Caves and Navagio Bay Swim Cruise

About This Experience

This is the trip to book if the Blue Caves themselves are the point. The boat is small — which is the whole argument for it — and it leaves from Agios Nikolaos, the harbour that opens directly onto the stretch of coast where the caves are, so no part of the two and a half hours is spent getting to the sightseeing.

The route heads north along the cliffs past a natural arch and the ruins of an old monastery to Navagio, where the boat holds offshore while you photograph the wreck, then doubles back for a swim at Agios Andreas Bay and a 30-minute stop at the Blue Caves. Because the hull is small it can sail deep into the caves and arches that the 60-seat boats have to admire from outside, and the water inside — lit from below off the white limestone — is the colour the photographs promise.

It suits anyone staying in the north-east (Alykes, Alikanas, Agios Nikolaos) and anyone who wants the caves and the wreck in one morning without a full day. There is no pickup and nothing served on board, so you drive to the harbour and bring water.

Good to Know & Caveats

• Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) is closed to landings and to swimming inside the bay through 31 October 2026; boats hold about 50 m offshore and you photograph the wreck from the water
• Weather-dependent: the boat leg is cancelled or rerouted when the west-coast swell builds, and the afternoon sea breeze (the maistro) makes later departures choppier
• No pickup: you make your own way to Agios Nikolaos, about 40 minutes by road from Zakynthos Town
• The blue glow inside the caves is strongest before noon — choose a morning departure if you can
• Swimming is from the boat; there is no beach landing
