The scenery — why the Blue Caves win
The northern caves are famous for a reason. Sunlight enters exceptionally clear water over pale limestone and reflects back with the red end of the spectrum absorbed, so everything inside — water, rock, your own hands — turns a saturated blue. It is strongest between about nine in the morning and noon and fades as the cliffs shade the entrances. The arches at Cape Skinari are the image on every Zakynthos postcard, and a small boat sailing under them is one of the island’s genuinely great half-hours.
The Keri Caves are pretty rather than spectacular. The water inside glows turquoise from a shallow seabed, the arches are lower and the caves smaller. The swimming — why the Keri Caves win
On most northern trips the caves are a slow pass and a photo stop, and the swim happens elsewhere — Agios Andreas bay, or from the boat at Selina. Only the small boats put you in the water at the caves, and even then briefly. In the south, swimming is the trip. The pairing decides most people
Neither cave system is a whole day on its own; what you pair it with is.
North = Shipwreck Beach. Almost every Blue Caves boat continues to Navagio, and the land-and-sea tours add the clifftop viewpoint. Note that the beach itself is closed to landings and to swimming inside the bay through 31 October 2026 — boats hold about 50 m offshore — so the wreck is a photograph from the water. South = turtles. The Keri boats cross Laganas Bay, where loggerheads surface between May and October, and land on Marathonisi. Where you are staying
Zakynthos is small but slow to drive. From Laganas, Kalamaki or Keri the southern harbours are minutes away and Agios Nikolaos is about an hour; from Tsilivi, Alykes or Agios Nikolaos the reverse is true. Hotel-pickup tours erase the problem at the cost of a longer day. If you are in Zakynthos Town, both coasts are around half an hour to forty minutes and the choice is yours. Boat-only trips cost about the same on both coasts — $29 to $41 — and the south is slightly shorter per trip. The north’s land-and-sea days are the outlier: eight to nine hours for $37 to $47, a lot of it in a minibus, in exchange for pickup, the viewpoint and the caves in one go.
