The Best Time to Visit the Zakynthos Caves — by Month, and by Hour of the Day
When to visit the Blue Caves and Keri Caves: the boat season month by month, sea temperatures, the 09:00–midday glow, the afternoon maistro wind, turtle season and when to book.
There are two “best times” for the Zakynthos caves, and they matter in different amounts. The month decides whether the boats are running, how warm the water is and how crowded the coves get. The hour decides whether the Blue Caves glow or merely look pretty — and that one is worth more than the choice of month. This guide takes them in that order, then adds the two things the brochures leave out: the afternoon wind, and the turtle season on the south coast.

The hour matters more than the month
The blue in the Blue Caves is sunlight scattered back from a pale limestone seabed through very clear water. It needs the sun high enough to drive light down into the sea, but not so late that the cliffs above the caves throw shadow across the water. In practice the window is about 09:00 to midday. Book a boat that is inside the caves in that window and the colour is the electric blue of the photographs; take the same boat at 15:00 and it is a handsome grey-blue that leaves people wondering what the fuss was about.
The same rule holds, more gently, for the Keri Caves in the south and for the west-coast caves on the Porto Vromi circuit: morning light, better colour.
The second half of the argument is the wind. Zakynthos’s summer breeze is the maistro, a north-westerly that rises through the afternoon and dies overnight. Mornings are calm and glassy, which is when small boats will actually sail into the arches; by mid-afternoon the west and north coasts pick up a chop, the return leg is bumpier, and skippers hold outside the caves rather than in them. The Meltemi that gets blamed for Greek boat cancellations is an Aegean wind and does not reach the Ionian.
So: the earliest departure you can get, whichever month you come.
Month by month
The boat season runs roughly from late April to the end of October, with the busiest operators sailing from May and the shoulder months depending on weather and demand. Sea temperatures are long-term monthly averages.

If you can choose: early June or mid-September. Warm water, working boats, and enough space in the coves that a swim stop feels like a swim rather than a queue.
If you are coming in July or August: it is still excellent — this is when the water is warmest — but book the first departure of the day, and book it early in your stay so a weather cancellation can be moved rather than lost.
Turtle season on the south coast
The southern trips — Keri Caves, Marathonisi, the Mizithres — run inside the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, where loggerhead turtles nest on the Laganas Bay beaches. Nesting runs from May and hatching continues through October; the park keeps a strict night curfew on the nesting beaches and rules for boats — a 100-metre distance from turtles unless they approach, no more than two vessels watching one animal, and very low speed during observation.
For a visitor this means two things. Turtle sightings are most likely in June, July and August, when the females are in the bay between nestings, and they are never guaranteed at any time. Crowds, and how to beat them
Between roughly 10:30 and 13:00 in high season the Blue Caves receive boats from Agios Nikolaos, Alykes, Skinari and Zakynthos Town, plus the boat legs of the land-and-sea tours, all at once. Three ways round it:

Booking and cancellations
West- and north-coast trips get cancelled or rerouted when the swell builds, and it happens more often than visitors expect, especially in April, May and October.
